Diya At A Glance
‘DIYA is an NGO (non-governmental organization) working for the promotion of non-formal education, human rights awareness, and against the violation of any such rights in Pakistan. It adheres and believes in the principles and knowledge of the WCAR (World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance).
DIYA was formally registered in 2002 with the efforts of 5 professionals who volunteered to help humanity. It was thought that something needed to be done for the community we live in as most projects are based in rural areas thus we tend to ignore our urban communities. Also a strong misperception exists that urban societies do not require any attention as most of them are considered modern however, a lot needs to be done in urban areas since several sectors require attention especially education, human rights, gender, child rights and health.
Urban societies in Pakistan are rapidly experiencing the fundamental process of social change that is diversifying and altering the traditional and rural societal system into a modern industrial, urban system. The change is overwhelming for most people and thus the growth process needs to be accompanied by awareness at several levels. Both adults and children especially women need to be catered to.
All of DIYAs initiatives have been based on a self help basis without any formal funding from any donor (local or international) so far. People have contributed generously to the cause at every step of the journey and volunteers have poured in their services.
